Stem Cell Therapy Restores Insulin Production in Type 1 Diabetes

Published on: Forbes

A clinical trial by Vertex Pharmaceuticals has shown that lab-grown stem cell–derived islet cells can restore natural insulin production in people with severe type 1 diabetes. Known as zimislecel, the “off-the-shelf” therapy enabled all participants to produce insulin again, with many no longer needing daily injections. The results highlight a major step forward for regenerative medicine and a potential pathway to curing other chronic diseases.
