Japanese researchers have successfully developed human placental stem cells from full-term pregnancies, overturning the belief that such cells could not be derived late in gestation. These new cells, called Ch-TS cells, mirror early-pregnancy stem cells but are taken from the smooth chorion, making them especially relevant for studying late-stage complications such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, and placental abruption. By providing an ethically accessible and biologically accurate model, this breakthrough opens new opportunities for earlier detection, prevention, and treatment of pregnancy-related conditions.
