Hospital Clínic Barcelona-IDIBAPS has become a European leader in academic CAR-T, treating over 500 patients since 2017 with two therapies approved in Spain: ARI-0001 for leukemia and ARI-0002 for multiple myeloma. Their decentralized model now enables treatment access across 13 hospitals in Spain.
With a 50% complete remission rate, their work demonstrates that non-commercial, public-sector innovation can deliver breakthrough outcomes. They are also developing CAR-T therapies for lymphoma and breast cancer. Spencer Knight calls it a powerful reminder of what’s possible with the right infrastructure and local empowerment.
