Gene Therapy Restores Hearing in Teens and Adults with Genetic Deafness

In a groundbreaking study by Karolinska Institutet, ten patients born deaf due to a mutation in the OTOF gene received an inner ear injection of a gene-carrying virus. Within a month, patients began hearing sounds, and by six months, their hearing improved from profound deafness (106 dB) to normal conversational range (52 dB). The youngest, a 7-year-old girl, heard rain and spoke with her mother for the first time. The therapy was safe and effective across age groups, including adults. This marks a major leap in treating hereditary hearing loss.
