Gene Therapy Restores Hearing in Deaf Children and Adults

Scientists at Karolinska Institutet have reported a breakthrough gene therapy that restored hearing in patients born deaf due to OTOF gene mutations. Ten individuals aged 1 to 24 received an inner-ear viral gene therapy, and within a month began hearing sounds. After six months, patients’ hearing improved from profound deafness to normal conversation levels, with minimal side effects.
