Emma Dimey was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer at just 23. After 11 years of failed surgeries, chemo, and radiation, she joined a first-in-human clinical trial led by Dr. Emil Lou at the University of Minnesota. Using CRISPR, doctors edited her immune cells to disable a key checkpoint gene (CISH), removing the block that was stopping her immune system from attacking the tumor.
Within two months, her scans showed no evidence of disease. Two years later, she remains cancer-free and has returned to life as an artist and illustrator, enjoying time with her family. Spencer Knight calls this a landmark example of how CRISPR is reshaping what’s possible in oncology.
