Aberrant Neural Stem Cell Activity Linked to Autism Development

A new study has identified a critical link between autism and the abnormal behavior of quiescent neural stem cells in the brain. Researchers found that loss of the gene Arid1b disrupts the balance of these cells, driving autism-like traits through heightened H3K27me3 activity. Strikingly, inhibiting this molecular change reversed autistic behaviors in experimental models, highlighting a potential therapeutic strategy. The findings also extend to humans, where similar neural stem cell patterns were observed in patients with ARID1B mutations and sporadic autism, offering new insights into neurodevelopmental disorders.
